Developers are users too! Building a well-designed developer ecosystem for your product can be a huge benefit to your users and your business. Third party apps and integrations have the potential to amplify your product’s value to users exponentially. This presentation will walk through considerations for developer experience (DX): designing application programming interfaces (APIs) and companion documentation to improve the usability of a developer platform. We’ll cover the anatomy of an API call, how they can be used to build solutions, and some examples of what well-designed APIs might look like. As a case study, we’ll talk about the efforts our team undertook to completely redesign our platform with user-centered methods. We’ll discuss techniques for running usability studies, API interaction design and information architecture, developer docs content strategy, and conducting research with developers.
