What is information architecture?

From website navigation systems and taxonomies to cross-channel ecosystems and enterprise UX, information architecture is a foundational discipline for UX professionals. Information architecture (IA) emerged in the 1970s and became a mainstream practice in the 1990s, applying ideas from library science and HCI to problems of labeling, categorization, and organizing complex bodies of information on the web. Yet, as IA evolves with the industry and takes different forms—extending to the enterprise scale, across the digital and physical worlds, and to AI-driven experiences—it is difficult to define and explain. What is information architecture? Is it still relevant? What does it mean for our work?

In this session, nine experienced practitioners from the local UX community will give rapid-fire, 2-minute presentations on their interpretation of information through different lenses. A moderator will then ask them challenging questions that stretch their understanding of IA.

Through these presentations and discussion, we will tour many dimensions of information architecture and its role in UX and design. We’ll cover how information architecture addresses questions of language, labeling, categorization, information-seeking and navigation, taxonomy, and ontology—the “nouns and verbs” of the systems we design. We’ll also see how IA can help us map conceptual structures and frameworks we can use to design more complex solutions. Ultimately, a combination of multiple approaches, viewpoints, and philosophies come together and contribute to information architecture as a field of practice: “the structural design of shared information environments”.
