With one in five Americans reporting feeling lonely, we are in the midst of a loneliness epidemic. Not only can loneliness decrease our quality of life - it can also kill us. Research studies have even shown that lonely populations are more likely to contract illness and even die earlier.
Many of us are quick to blame technology for our isolation. But what if we could use technology to decrease social isolation and build community in public spaces?
In this 10-minute talk, we will learn how to apply principles from design and social psychology to increase the likelihood of both spontaneous and planned social interaction in public spaces. And, we will explore how increasing social interaction can drive profits for both businesses and cities.
